As protests over the police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery (and many other Black Americans) spill into their third week--and more and more marches and gatherings are being organized for kids and families--parents may be trying hard to explain concepts of police brutality, white supremacy, and racism to their kids in an honest and age-appropriate manner. A wonderful place to start teaching your children about race is by making certain your book are stocked with a variety of stories that centre, or exclusively feature, Black characters.

Starting early is important: Children as young as six months old may recognize race-based differences, based on a post by the American Academy of Pediatrics. And between the ages of two and four, kids begin internalizing racial prejudice. It's essential to note that books alone should not be the degree of a child's instruction on race. In addition to modeling anti-racist behaviour, parents will need to speak with their kids about what they're reading and, especially now, what they are seeing in the world.
; for grade schoolers, start pointing out and debunking stereotypes and race-based prejudice in books and media; and to understand their viewpoints irrespective of age, follow up curiosities and observations together with open-ended queries, such as"How do you feel about that?" And"Why do you think that?"
